NEWS AND REGIONAL FIELD REPORTS

Harvesting Begins In The Coastal Region, And Save The Date For The Arkansas Field Day

July 11, 2024

July regional field report for south central Louisiana and Mississippi

South Central Louisiana

Harvest has begun in South Louisiana in a handful of fields, and I fully expect harvest to begin in full force by the latter part of this week and into next week. Grain fill seems to be pretty good on the fields that I have seen.

At this time of year, I am always anxious to hear how well the crop is yielding. This season, I am particularly excited about the potential for our two most popular varieties, PVL03 and CLL19. Both have looked good to this point.

PVL03, our most popular variety and the top-planted variety in the state of Louisiana looks the best that it has since its commercial release. Part of that, I believe, is that we are getting more familiar with the specific management practices that help PVL03 thrive and be successful.

I’ve also gotten a lot of positive feedback about CLL19. It has definitely passed the eye test so far, and I think it is going to continue to impress as we move through the harvest. This could be a popular variety in this region for many seasons to come.

I also want to send my thoughts and prayers to everyone who has been and will be in the path of Hurricane Beryl and the storms associated with it. I pray you and your families stay safe.

Mississippi

We’ve seen considerable variations in field conditions in my region this year.

Persistent wet weather in May caused trouble for many farmers, who had to do the best they could with herbicide applications and pulling levees during dry windows. Conversely, the month of June was hot and dry, especially the last couple of weeks.

Overall, in July, the rice is progressing quickly in Mississippi. Fungicide applications have started on some of the earlier planted fields, and I have seen rice heads starting to poke out in a few areas. I expect in the next couple of weeks that a bunch of rice will be starting to head. It excites me to see rice moving this quickly. It should make for an early harvest, weather permitting.

While some of the rice is starting to head out, there were also later planted fields that had permanent floods being established at the end of June. For this late-planted rice, you will need to apply fungicide applications earlier.

With it being so hot, please stay hydrated and safe. If you have any questions, you can call me anytime.

Arkansas Field Day August 15

Arkansas Field Day August 15

It’s a big year for rice acres, and the annual Horizon Ag Arkansas Field Day is a great time to hear how high-yielding varieties like CLL18 and CLL16 are doing this season, along with promising new lines like PVL04 and CLL19.

It’s also a chance to find out about Clearfield® and Provisia® varieties in the pipeline, like new CLM05, a high-yielding medium grain variety from the University of Arkansas breeding program that will be available for planting in 2025, and other developments important to rice producers in the region.

The field day is set for August 15 at the Northeast Rice Research and Extension Center in Harrisburg, with registration beginning at 4:30 p.m. It includes presentations by Horizon Ag and rice industry specialists, opportunities to view Horizon Ag varieties in the field, and a great dinner with friends in the industry.

Save the date on your Gmail or Outlook calendars.
